Place du Pas

a neighbourhood square

The “Place du Pas” is a small neighbourhood square in the heart of the old village of Vernayaz. It takes its name from the time when the horses had to cross it at a slow pace. Residential houses surround it entirely, sharing the common space. Flowers in pots and garden furniture overflow onto it and give it its domestic character. The refurbishment of the square seeks to assert its intimate atmosphere with the plantation of fifteen Scots pines: a tree from the forest is transferred to the village. A ribbon of light coloured granite paving encircles the pines and existing maple trees, creating an ambulatory in the shade and framing the new and highly differentiated textures of the square’s surface.
